Coin Values Moving with Precious Metals: Up-Dated 11/18/2024: Gold $2585 | Silver $30.60

1924 Dime Value

The 1924 dime value is at a minimum of $2.24 helped by the price of silver it contains. However these old Mercury dimes are avidly collected today and many are valued higher.

Uncirculated 1924 Dime Value

First, worth a premium are the elusive mint marked dimes, struck at the Denver and San Francisco mints, these two have the highest value of the three mints producing coins in 1924. Dimes struck at Philadelphia although not as valuable as the Denver and San Francisco coins are still popular when found in higher grades.

Next, affecting your 1924 dime value is its state of preservation. The majority of these old dimes are heavily circulated and worn, lacking many of the original details. The "Uncirculated" 1924 dime pictured, is a $285 coin because of condition and a "D" mintmark but importantly it would make a nice addition to any Mercury dime collection.

The value chart details how much your 1924 dime is worth, highlighting the different values depending on the amount of wear, and mintmarks. Below the chart are descriptions of the mintmark location and how to judge the condition of your old dime.

1924 Dime D Mintmark Location

Causing three sets of values and having a real influence in the better preserved coins are mintmarks found on your dime.

The highest value in Uncirculated condition is the "S" mint marked dime minted in San Francisco, find the "S" on the reverse. A "D" in this location indicates the Denver mint, Philadelphia did not use a mintmark.

Blazing Gem 1924 Dime Value

Selling at a David Lawrence Rare Coin Auction for the high bid of $442.50 the value of this rare 1924 Mercury dime is far above the typical average uncirculated price. The state of preservation assures it is in an exclusive group, easily one of the finest known.

Notable of the gem condition are many characteristics collectors appreciate, and when found, bid aggressively to add a dime of high quality to their collection. The first impression is a stunning bright silver and distinctive blue coloring. Adding value are fresh surfaces with no marring and detracting nicks caused by contact with other coins. And a subtle feature, a very bold strike producing a finely detailed design, itself somewhat rare for this date.

Interest in your 1924 dime and its value is high, specifically in the nicer conditions. Mercury dimes are popular and with many collectors assembling sets there is a solid demand for these coins.

Condition Drives 1924 Dime Value Higher

After you determine if your old Mercury dime has a mintmark the next step is judging how well it has survived until today. Done by carefully judging its condition and assigning a "grade." A nicely detailed dime with the least amount of wear becomes a highly collectible coin and would make a welcome addition to any collection.

1924 Dime Uncirculated Condition

Uncirculated: This Mercury dime never circulated. Untouched since minted, it shines with luster. Your coin in this condition may show toning, but underneath there is no evidence of wear. Rotated under a light, an unbroken, radiating luster rolls across the surface. An uncirculated coin is one sparkling with a freshness placing it at the top of 1924 dime value.

Mercury Dime Extremely Fine Condition

Extremely Fine: Although this coin has been in circulation, it sill remains very detailed in appearance. Across the surface a small amount of wear is visible. The feather details of the wing above Liberty's ear have worn and lost detail but remain separated. Also a slight flatness to the once rounded cheek is noticeable. On the reverse, all of the vertical lines of the "fasces" are separated. Your coin is a nice collectible condition with a premium 1924 dime value.

Mercury Dime Fine Condition

Fine: Wear is noticeable covering the entire surface, diminishing the minor parts of the design. A blending of Liberty's hair details on the obverse and a flattening of the design in the leaf details on the reverse. At this stage of wear your old coin still retains a pleasing look.

Mercury Dime Good Condition

Good: After many years of use Liberty's portrait is reduced to just an outline with little detail left. The heights of the rims on both the obverse and reverse have been reduced to the point of merging with the tops of the lettering in the legends. Worn almost smooth these dimes are at the low end of the 1924 dime value.
